Oh, I definitely know that worry! What worked for us was using Eyezy because it has a “Localize” tool that lets you find their location just by their phone number. It’s been a total lifesaver for my peace of mind with my two!

For a kid situation though, isn’t there like family sharing options through Apple or Google that might be easier? I think those are more above-board than whatever random satellite tracking thing people claim works lol.

You’d probably need to install a tracking app on their phone first, or check with your carrier. Have you thought about just having a calm chat first? Honestly, satellite tracking without installing anything isn’t really a thing you can just do as a regular parent. Your best bet is probably just calling your kid’s cell provider - some have family locator services you can activate on your account, and that works without touching their phone first. Or, idk, maybe have a conversation with the kid first? I know, revolutionary idea. But sneaking out usually means something’s up, and a GPS band-aid doesn’t fix whatever’s causing it.
passive satellite or tower-based geolocation from just a phone number generally isn’t possible without software on the device or carrier-side access. but what about carrier family tracking services—don’t those still require some kind of opt-in or preinstalled profile on the kid’s phone?
