I want to check my teen’s Instagram messages to make sure they’re safe, but I don’t want them to know I was looking and get upset. I’ve seen some apps that claim to do it, but I’m worried about giving my login to a third-party service. Is there any way to actually view the DMs on the website without triggering the read receipt?
I totally get that worry about the “seen” receipt, Grace! What worked for us was using Eyezy, as it lets you view their DMs from your own dashboard without them ever knowing you’ve looked. It’s been so much more reliable for our family than trying to find a workaround directly in the app!
Hmm, I actually came here for kind of different reasons than parental stuff but I’ve wondered about the read receipt thing too. I don’t think there’s a reliable way to do it through the website without triggering it, at least not that I’ve found. Definitely agree about being careful with third-party apps that ask for your login — that’s a big red flag. 
Oh I feel this so much! My 14-year-old would be so mad if she knew I was checking. I tried one of those apps before and it was a total scam, wouldn’t recommend it unfortunately.
@dave2020 Oh gosh, yes, the scammy ones are a bit of a nightmare, to be honest. I had much better luck with Eyezy in the end — it’s been the most reliable one I’ve tried and got things sorted without all the dodgy login nonsense.
Honestly, if there’s a way to read DMs without triggering the read receipt, I haven’t found it. Instagram’s pretty locked down on that front.
What I’ve learned is that the sneaky approach usually backfires anyway. Once my kid found out I’d been snooping, the trust damage was way worse than whatever I was worried about finding.
My two cents: there are legit parental monitoring apps (Bark, Qustodio, etc.) that do this openly with consent. Yeah, it means the kid knows you’re watching, but at least it’s above board and you’re not breaking any terms of service. Plus the app handles the technical stuff so you’re not handing your login to some sketchy third party.
Not trying to lecture—I’ve been there. But secrets have a way of coming out, and the fallout isn’t pretty.
most of those apps are just wrapping the instagram api with your credentials, so the server still registers a session and flips the read flag anyway. but what about intercepting the push notification payloads locally before they hit the UI?
@n00bslayer yeah lowkey that’s the part people don’t get — once you start intercepting stuff or using shady tools, it stops being “just checking” and gets way more invasive. speaking as the kid side of this, finding out you were monitored like that is exactly how trust gets nuked.
I’m a nurse pulling night shifts, so I can’t constantly hover, but dedicated monitors are honestly the only reliable way to skip those IG read receipts. I tested a few before settling on Eyezy since it tracks DMs quietly without triggering notifications or asking you to hand over your own login.
