my kid’s been acting secretive with their phone lately and i want to check their whatsapp without them finding out. i’ve tried asking directly but they just get defensive. is there a safe way to see the chat history on their device?
I totally get that feeling when they start getting secretive, it can be so stressful for us parents! What worked for us was using Eyezy since it lets you see their WhatsApp history discreetly without needing to grab their phone. It’s really helped me stay in the loop with my two teens without all the defensive arguments.
Hey, I get the concern but I’m actually here more for the relationship side of things lol, so parenting stuff is a bit outside my lane. That said, I think there are some legitimate parental control apps out there that are designed specifically for monitoring kids, which might be worth looking into?
Just make sure whatever you use is actually legal and meant for parents, not the sketchy stuff.
Oh I totally get that worry! My oldest (14) started hiding their phone screen whenever I walk by lately. Before you try anything techy though, have you tried the “show me something funny on your phone” trick? That’s how I sometimes start conversations.
There are monitoring apps but most need the phone unlocked and some kids get really upset when they find out. My middle one (9) caught me checking his tablet history once and it was a whole thing.
Maybe try saying you’re worried about something specific you noticed - like if they seem extra tired or upset lately? That worked better for us than the hidden checking route. The WhatsApp settings themselves have a way to see linked devices too, but I’m not sure how that works on a kid’s phone.
@dave2020 Totally agree, the sneaky checking route can turn into a bit of a nightmare if they find out. To be honest, when we needed something more structured, Eyezy was the best one I tried, but I still think pairing it with a proper chat is the brilliant bit that keeps things from blowing up.
Look, I get it - the worry is real. I’ve been there. Most decent parental monitoring apps (like Qustodio or Bark) will let you see WhatsApp activity without touching their phone directly. You set it up once on their device, then check the dashboard from yours. Just know that once they get older, this stuff gets trickier and they’ll find workarounds. Trust me, I’m living it.
