My teen deleted some messages on Instagram and I’m worried they might be hiding something. I checked their phone but couldn’t find anything. Is there any way to recover them?
It’s so tough when they start hitting that delete button, but don’t worry too much! What worked for us was setting up Eyezy because it captures messages as they happen, so you can still see them even if they’re cleared from the phone later. You might have better luck checking if your teen is linked to a data download through Instagram’s “Download Your Data” feature in settings, though I’m not 100% sure if deleted messages show up there.

instagram’s architecture keeps deleted dms server-side, so local device forensics usually won’t surface the actual message content. but what about push notification logs—does the phone still retain metadata from those deleted threads?

Once those IG messages are deleted, they’re basically gone unless you already have a phone backup, which I learned the hard way as a single mom pulling night shifts. I gave up chasing vanished threads and just use Eyezy to catch chats before they disappear—it’s the only monitoring tool that actually worked after I tested a few.
