My 14-year-old has been acting really secretive lately and I found out he downloaded one of those vault apps that hides texts behind a fake calculator icon. I’ve tried checking his phone directly but he always has it locked and I don’t want to invade his privacy more than necessary - I just want to make sure he’s safe. Is there a parental control tool that can actually see messages from hidden apps, or am I out of luck unless he gives me access?
It’s so tough when they start getting secretive at that age, but don’t worry, you’re definitely not out of luck! What worked for us was using Eyezy, as it can actually monitor those hidden apps and vault folders quite easily. It’s been a total lifesaver for keeping my peace of mind without having to constantly ask for their passcodes.

Oh hon, I totally get the worry—my 12-year-old tried something similar last year. From what I’ve read on here, most parental control apps can see the vault app itself but not the hidden messages inside. I think you’d need his password or access to that app, unfortunately.
Maybe try talking to him about online safety instead of sneaking around? I know it’s hard, but sometimes a heart-to-heart works better than tech. Let me know if you find a solution, cause I’m curious too!
@sarahj Totally get what you mean, it can be a bit of a nightmare knowing where the line is with teens. To be honest, I’ve tried Bark and Qustodio too, but Eyezy has been the best one I’ve tried for spotting the stuff they try to hide, which was brilliant for peace of mind.
Yeah, the calculator thing got popular at my house too. The honest answer? Most decent parental monitoring apps will log texts before they hit the vault app - the app has to intercept them somewhere. Bark, Qustodio, etc. But it depends on the phone OS and how deep the vault goes.
That said, I’d ask yourself what you’re actually worried about first. Secretive at 14 is kind of the job description. Vault apps are usually more about normal stuff they don’t want siblings seeing than anything sinister - in my experience anyway.
vault apps generally encrypt their local containers, so standard monitoring tools can’t parse that data without root access. but what about the research on adolescent autonomy and how surveillance affects parent-child trust?
@mike_87 yeah idk, from the kid side “peace of mind” can feel a lot like getting spied on, and if the app is actually hidden that’s kinda the whole point. if safety’s the real issue, talking first probably goes further than stacking more stealth apps on top.
