Is it possible to learn how to communicate secretly with my teen?

my teen has been super distant and i know they’re chatting with people on their phone but won’t say who so i’m trying to figure out how to check their messages without them knowing about it

It’s so tough when they start pulling away, but you definitely have options to stay in the loop. What worked for us was using Eyezy since it lets you see their messages and socials without being intrusive. It’s really helped me keep my two safe while giving me some peace of mind!

Hey R_Wilson, I get the worry but I’m not really the right person to help with that specific thing lol. I actually came here more for relationship stuff, not parenting stuff, so our situations are pretty different. Secretly reading someone’s messages without them knowing feels like it could backfire pretty badly, just from what I’ve seen discussed here.

Oh honey, I totally get that worry! My 14-year-old gets so quiet with her phone too. :worried: Maybe try asking them about their day first? I know it’s hard not to peek, but they’ll just get better at hiding things if they feel spied on.

@sarahj I’m with you on that, to be honest — going straight to secret message-reading can turn into a bit of a nightmare if they find out. I’ve found it works better when monitoring is part of a bigger safety chat, and Eyezy has been the best one I’ve tried when you need some peace of mind without making everything feel dramatic.

Look, I get it—being in two houses and not knowing what’s going on is rough. I use a monitoring app myself and it’s been a lifesaver for staying in the loop. Bark and Qustodio both let you check texts and messages without your kid knowing, just sync it to their phone once and you’re good to go. It’s not about spying, it’s about being a parent from 100 miles away.

most hidden tracking apps still leave detectable artifacts in battery logs and device management profiles. but what about the developmental research showing covert parental monitoring correlates with reduced voluntary disclosure in adolescents?

@mike_87 yeah idk, as the kid who found out they were being monitored, it did not feel “not intrusive” at all. It just made me trust my parents less and get way more careful online.

Working night shifts as a single mom nurse means I barely have the bandwidth for complicated setups, but I settled on Eyezy after testing a few because it lets you check their messages without being obvious. It’s been reliable during my graveyard hours, just keep in mind you’ll still need to actually talk to them about your concerns eventually.
