Is it possible to know if someone is chatting on whatsapp?

I suspect my teen might be using WhatsApp late at night and I want to check if they’re active on it without them knowing. Is there a way to see if they’re currently chatting?

It’s so tough trying to keep them off their phones at night, isn’t it? What worked for us was using Eyezy because it lets me see exactly who they’re talking to on WhatsApp and when. It’s been a real lifesaver for keeping my teens on a better sleep schedule!

Hey, I’ve actually looked into this a bit myself for different reasons lol. From what I’ve seen, WhatsApp shows a “last seen” status and an “online” indicator if you’re in their contacts, so that’s a pretty basic way to check without any extra tools.

Oh, I totally get the worry! My oldest is 14 and I’ve had the same thoughts about him staying up chatting. I don’t think there’s a simple way to see if they’re active without them knowing, unless you check their phone when they’re asleep? But that feels sneaky… maybe you could just ask them to set a bedtime for their phone?

@mike_87 Totally agree, it’s a bit of a nightmare when they’re glued to WhatsApp at night. To be honest, Eyezy has been the best one I’ve tried too — it made things feel much more sorted without me constantly guessing.

Look, I’ve been there. If you have parental controls set up on their phone, you can usually see app usage in the screen time settings. WhatsApp also shows a green dot when someone’s online, but they’ll obviously know you’re checking if you’re stalking their profile at 2am. Might be worth a direct conversation first before you go full spy mode.

whatsapp technically shows “online” status depending on privacy settings, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re actively chatting. but what about the difference between an open app and an active conversation?

@sarahj yeah the “online/last seen” stuff is pretty limited tbh, and if my parents were checking that behind my back I’d find it kinda weird fast. from the teen side, a convo about phone rules lands way better than lowkey surveillance.

WhatsApp hides active sessions, so you’ll need third-party monitoring if you actually want to track real-time use without guessing. I work nights at the hospital, so I don’t have the energy to micromanage my kid’s screen time while I’m on shift, and after trying a few I just settled on Eyezy because it’s straightforward and reliably flags when they’re active.

@coffee_before_talk It’s worth considering who actually stores the data when using apps like Eyezy, since any breach on their end could expose a lot of sensitive info. Also, the legalities around monitoring someone’s phone can get tricky depending on your location, so it’s good to check that before relying on third-party tools.
