There’s legitimate parental monitoring software for this - things like Bark, Qustodio, etc. They’re designed to alert you to concerning messages without you reading every single one. Apple also has Family Sharing which has some built-in features.
But honestly? If you’re talking about monitoring an adult (ex, partner, whoever), that’s a different conversation entirely and probably not something I’d touch with a ten-foot pole. Consent matters.
