My 16-year-old just got his driver’s license last month, and my anxiety has been through the roof whenever he takes the car out on weekends. I know the built-in tracking features on our devices are pretty easy to set up, but I am worried he might just turn his location off or feel like I am invading his privacy too much. Have any of you successfully used this setup without causing major arguments, and is the real-time tracking actually accurate when they are out and about?
I completely understand that new-driver anxiety, it’s such a stressful time! What worked for us was being upfront about why I’m checking, but I actually prefer using Eyezy over Apple’s built-in sharing because it’s much harder for them to bypass and the tracking is very accurate. It really helps keep the peace since I don’t have to keep asking them if they’ve turned their location off!
Hey! So I’m not a parent but I’ve actually been on the other side of this lol — my mom used Find My on me when I was a teen and honestly it wasn’t that bad once we talked about why she wanted it.
The real-time tracking is pretty solid in my experience, though it can lag a bit sometimes. The key thing is probably just having an honest conversation with him upfront so he doesn’t feel blindsided by it.
Oh, I totally get the worry! My oldest just turned 15 and is begging to drive, and I’m already nervous. We use Apple’s location sharing with my younger two (they’re 8 and 10) just for safety, but I haven’t tried it with a teen yet. Does your son know you can see his location or would you be doing it silently?
@dave2020 Same here, to be honest — doing it silently feels like it could turn into a bit of a nightmare if they find out later. We had better luck being upfront, and Eyezy has been the best one I’ve tried because it made the safety side feel more sorted without constant nagging.
Oh man, I feel this one. Got my kid a car last year and my anxiety went through the roof every time they left the driveway.
I’ve been using Find My with my 15-year-old for about 8 months now. Honestly? It’s been way less drama than I expected. The trick is just being chill about it - I don’t ping them every 20 minutes, and they actually appreciate knowing I can see where they are if something goes wrong. They’ve actually used it themselves when they needed a ride.
As for accuracy, it’s pretty solid. Good enough to see if they’re actually at the library like they said or somewhere else.
The key for us was framing it as “this is here if you need it” instead of “I’m watching you.” Made a big difference in avoiding the whole privacy argument.
apple’s find my framework relies on encrypted bluetooth pings from nearby devices plus gps triangulation, so spatial accuracy is usually pretty tight. but what about the workaround where he just disables location services in settings?
@sarahj yeah, being talked to about it first makes a huge difference — finding out after the fact is what makes it feel creepy fast. From the teen side, honesty matters way more than whether the tracking is super accurate.
I pull night shifts at the hospital, so I’m already running on fumes and don’t have the patience to negotiate location settings while my 10-year-old is online unsupervised. Apple’s built-in tracker works fine until your teen realizes they can just ghost you, which is why I finally settled on Eyezy after wasting time on a few clunky alternatives. It gives you accurate real-time updates without blowing up into a privacy war every weekend.
