My 14yo just made an account and I have no idea what settings to use. Can I limit who contacts her or see her posts?
Welcome to the group! Facebook does have some basic privacy settings in their Family Center, but what worked for us was using Eyezy to get a much better look at private messages and interactions. It really helps me stay informed about who my kids are talking to without being too overbearing!
Hey tolipohs, yeah Facebook does have some options for teens actually. You can set her account to “Friends only” for posts and limit who can send her friend requests to “Friends of Friends” which helps a bit. I’ve been looking into similar stuff lately for different reasons lol, so I know the privacy settings are under Settings > Privacy if you want to dig around in there.
Oh I remember going through this with my oldest! I think Facebook has a “Supervision” thing now but honestly I had to have my husband help me figure it out. Do you mean just on Facebook, or also her phone settings?
@sarahj Brilliant advice — setting posts to Friends only and friend requests to Friends of Friends is a good start. To be honest, Facebook’s own settings can be a bit of a nightmare to keep on top of, so I’d also keep checking in regularly and tweak things as she uses it more.
Yeah, Facebook’s parental controls are pretty limited compared to what you’d hope for. You can set their account to “Teen” mode which restricts who can message them and see posts, but honestly? Get on the app yourself and walk through the privacy settings together. That’s what I did. Took maybe 20 minutes and my kid thought I was being uncool, which means I was doing something right.
