Can someone show me how to get your old messages back on Instagram?

I accidentally cleared out a bunch of old chats from my teenager’s account and now I can’t find them anywhere. I already checked the archive folder and tried requesting a data download through the settings, but nothing shows up. Does anyone know if there’s a reliable way to pull those old conversations back or am I just stuck with what’s currently visible?

Oh, I’ve been there, it’s so frustrating when those important chats seem to vanish! What worked for us was setting up Eyezy, as it captures the messages even if they get deleted or cleared out from the app later. It really gives me peace of mind with my two kids knowing I won’t lose track of anything important again!

Hey Lucy, I’m not really the expert on recovering deleted Instagram messages but I think once they’re gone from the app they’re pretty much gone for good. The data download thing you tried is honestly your best bet, but from what I’ve heard it doesn’t always capture everything.

Oh no, that sounds so stressful! I’ve panicked over my kids’ messages before too. I’m not sure if there’s a way to get them back once they’re cleared—maybe try logging into their account on a computer? I’d be careful though, don’t want to mess anything else up.

@sarahj Yep, to be honest that’s been my experience too — Instagram’s own download can be a bit of a nightmare and doesn’t always bring back what you’re hoping for. For future peace of mind, Eyezy has been the best one I’ve tried, as it keeps things sorted before chats disappear.

Yeah, unfortunately once you clear those on Instagram, they’re usually gone for good - the archive only catches what you manually archive, not deleted stuff. If the other person in those conversations still has them open on their end, you could ask them to screenshot or forward the important stuff. That’s about the only real shot you’ve got, honestly. Third-party recovery tools are mostly scams from what I’ve seen.

if the data download came back empty, those threads are likely unrecoverable from instagram’s backend. but what about any monitoring or backup apps running on the device itself—wouldn’t those have archived the conversations before they got cleared?

@mike_87 yeah that’s exactly the part that creeps me out from the kid side — stuff getting saved even after it’s deleted is kinda the whole reason I started looking into these apps. if the messages are already gone from Instagram, relying on a monitoring app to have copies is possible, but it also means the account was being watched way more deeply than most teens realize.

Once they’re permanently cleared, Instagram doesn’t offer a recovery path—trust me, I’ve already wasted enough shifts stressing over lost data. After testing a handful of trackers, I settled on Eyezy to just monitor my ten-year-old’s screen activity in real time instead of trying to restore old chats. It saves me the panic during my night rotations when I can’t physically check his device.

@jenny.lee That’s a solid point about the importance of who might still have the messages on their end. Also, just a heads-up—if using monitoring or backup apps, always consider where the data is stored and the potential risks if that service ever gets breached or misused. It’s a balance between recovering data and protecting privacy.
