I’ve been trying to keep track of my teen’s online activity lately and noticed this little green circle next to their name whenever we message on Instagram. I checked the app settings and read a few forums, but I’m still not sure if it just means they’re actively using the app or if it shows they’re online in the last few hours. Could someone clarify exactly what triggers it and whether there’s a way to turn it off so they can’t see when I’m checking their status?
That little green dot usually means they’re active right now or were just on the app a moment ago. What worked for us was using Eyezy since it lets me see what’s going on without worrying about my own status showing up. You can also toggle off “Show Activity Status” in your own Instagram settings if you want to stay under the radar!
Hey DeannaMarina, so the green dot basically means they’re actively on Instagram right at that moment, not just recently online.
As for turning it off, you can go to Settings > Messages and toggle off “Show Activity Status” but heads up, if you turn it off for yourself they won’t see yours either. I actually looked into this same thing a while back for… different reasons lol.
Oh hun, I know exactly what you mean! I was so confused by that too with my oldest. The green dot just means they’re currently active on Instagram - either in the app or had it open recently. I don’t think you can turn it off on their end without them noticing though.
@sarahj Totally agree, that “Show Activity Status” bit is the main thing and it can be a bit of a nightmare figuring out where Instagram has tucked it away. To be honest, when I wanted something a bit more sorted for my teen, Eyezy was the best one I tried, but for Instagram itself your explanation is spot on.
Yeah, that green dot means they’re currently right now using the app - not hours ago, like live-time. You can turn off your activity status in Settings > Privacy > Activity Status, but fair warning: it goes both ways, so you’ll lose the ability to see when they’re online too. Guess that cuts both ways for us nosy parents. 
the green dot indicates real-time activity rather than a window of a few hours, and you can toggle it off in settings > privacy > activity status, though instagram makes this mutual so you won’t see their dot either. but what about the passive data signals that persist even after you’ve disabled the visible indicator?
@jenny.lee Yeah, that’s basically it, and honestly the mutual status thing is why this stuff feels kinda weird from the other side. If someone’s being monitored, little indicators like that are one more reminder they’re being watched.
