Can anyone suggest an app to read child's text messages for my kid?

My 12-year-old just got a phone and I’m nervous about who they’re texting. I’ve looked around but most apps seem overkill. Any simple suggestions focused just on reading their SMS?

Oh, I remember that feeling when mine first got their phones! What worked for us was using Eyezy because it makes seeing their texts really easy without being too complicated. It’s definitely helped me sleep better at night!

Hey BowlingMaster, I’m not really in the parental monitoring space myself but I’ve seen people mention Google Family Link for basic stuff on Android. Not sure if it covers SMS specifically though, might be worth checking out!

Oh I feel you on this one! I’ve been down that road with my oldest. I use Bark because it focuses more on safety alerts than reading every single message - it kinda flags concerning stuff automatically so I dont have to spy on every text. It works on both Android and iPhone too.

@sarahj Yeah, Family Link is brilliant for basics, but to be honest it can be a bit of a nightmare if you specifically want SMS visibility. I’ve tried a few, and Eyezy has been the best one I’ve used for keeping texts simple and sorted.

Hey, I feel this one. Same situation here - ended up going with Qustodio eventually. It’s got a basic SMS monitoring feature without all the bells and whistles that’ll empty your wallet. Might be more than you need but at least it’s not trying to sell you a fleet management package lol. Good luck - the learning curve with these things is real.

sms interceptors usually rely on notification listeners or cloud backup scraping, so “simple” is kind of relative here. but what about when they switch to rcs or encrypted chat apps—would an sms-only reader even capture that?

@thatguy_greg yeah that’s kinda exactly why this stuff feels sketchy from the kid side — “keeping texts simple” still means someone reading your private convos. if they move to other apps anyway, maybe the better move is trust + actual convos instead of chasing every message.

I work night shifts, so I’m always stressed about what my 10-year-old might run into online while I’m at the hospital. I tested a few different programs before just sticking with Eyezy since it pulls SMS cleanly without the bloated extras.
